How much energy will I save with a new boiler?

The cost of energy is rising, which makes it more important than ever for homeowners to find ways to save on their bills. Installing a new boiler is one of the best: it can cut your heating bill and help you prepare for future price rises.

Boilers are more efficient than ever

Thanks to advances in technology, boilers now use less energy to heat your home. A new boiler can be up to 95% efficient, a big improvement on older boilers, which can be as low as 60% efficient. That means you could save up to 40% on your heating bill by upgrading.

Newer boilers also have better controls, so you can fine-tune the temperature and keep your home comfortable without wasting energy.

In conclusion

Thanks to the improved efficiency of newer boilers, you could save up to 40% on your heating costs: a significant saving that helps offset the cost of a new boiler.

How to improve your boiler’s efficiency before an energy price rise

Every household is worried about rising energy prices. One thing everyone should do is check that their boiler is running efficiently. An engineer can do this for you, and these tips will help too.

  • Call a qualified engineer. A repair or service can make all the difference to your boiler’s efficiency. Regular servicing keeps it running safely and smoothly, and catches minor issues early.
  • Keep it clean. Many people forget this: cleaning the outer casing of the boiler helps prevent a build-up of muck inside.
  • Bleed your radiators properly. A small task that makes a big difference to radiator performance, and to your bills.

How long does it take to install a boiler?

A boiler replacement may seem simple, but a range of factors affect how long it takes. On average, an installation takes anywhere from around 6 hours for a simple exchange to a few days for something more involved.

Installing a brand new system

If you have moved into an older property without reliable heating and hot water, there is far more work than a simple swap. This can take up to a couple of weeks, as pipework and heating need to be built around the property.

Changing the type of boiler

Switching boiler type takes longer than a like-for-like swap, though typically no more than a few days, as a new boiler may have different pipe requirements.

Changing the fuel type

If you are changing the fuel you use (for example gas, electric or oil), allow a few additional days for the extra electrical and plumbing work.

How to save money on your gas bill

Cutting your gas bill frees up money and reduces your carbon footprint at the same time. Here are some tried and tested ways to do it:

  • More insulation. Good insulation helps your home hold on to its heat.
  • Curtains and blinds. Windows and doors lose warmth easily; thick curtains or blinds in the coldest months slow that heat loss noticeably.
  • Service your boiler. A thorough service by a Gas Safe registered engineer keeps your boiler working to its full potential. Faults can waste gas and lead to unnecessary bills.
  • Replace an older boiler. Modern boilers are much more energy efficient, so upgrading an old, tired boiler can make a big difference.
